With the end of the year came the fanciful idea that I should knit an intricate cowl 'shawl'. I'm Britta (BraveAmberBeats on Tumblr), and I give you the bumbling cartography of that ambition.

Hola Lovelies,

Here’s a bit of an update on some projects I’ve recently completed.

Outlander has become one of my newest fixations, both the epic novel series, as well as the beautifully conceived series on Starz. With Claire Beauchamp’s magical ride back to the 1700’s came a slew of wonderful knit shawls and cowls and hand warmers…basically a knitters dream.

What I love most about the items showcased are how practical they are whilst imbuing a rustic beauty that mirrors the vast Scottish Highlands themselves.

The first is Kalurah’s pattern The Gathering. The second is Jen’s pattern Sassenach. Both are wonderful for beginners, require 2 skeins of Lionbrand Thick & Quick yarn (I used shades Claret and Mesquite) used together, sized 50 needles. Only The Gathering requires two new discoveries of mine, The Provisional Cast On (Requiring a Crochet hook), and the Kitchener Stitch Bind off which creates a seamless look.

Happy Knitting!

Howdy,

I hope you’re all having a lovely weekend! I’ve spent my Saturday knitting small bow barrettes, one for me, and another for the amazing bun in my life, ooo and aww-ing over Emmadime’s Knitting by Design, catching up on my favorite magazine, Oh Comely, and wondering how cool it would be if someone came up with patterns for Ms. Effie Trinket’s adorable wardrobe. That would be such a dream! Especially if it were possible to knit the most minimalist outfit she has…her District 13 uniform. Have any of you seen any simple patterns likened to the above over-sized shirt?

What are you knitting?

It’s incredibly difficult for me to have only one project going at a time, so I generally have several.

The first pair of socks I ever made were washed and dried incorrectly accidentally BUT I kept them and put them in a shadow box :) #knitter #knitting #socks #firstpair #shadowbox

This is lovely and adorable. May have to think of something similair for my first pair of socks, which are getting a bit worn out.

Hey Fellow Knit-Buds,
Today I’m having a lazy Saturday listening to First Aid Kit’s new album Stay God (which I highly recommend). It’s getting me in the mood for the screenplay I’m writing. And I’m knitting Knit Collage’s Ladder Stitch Cowl, only I’ve decided not to drop the stitches to make the ladders at the end. This yarn is too beautiful and too pricey to ruin by making a mistake, lol.
Inspired by Dream In Vintage's weekly post, I thought I'd ask, what are you working on?
Can’t wait to see all of your lovely projects!

Hey I was at Michaels picking up another bag of polyfil and walked through the yarn section and came upon this.
This is Michaels’ yarn brand Loops and Tread and curious to how much it felt like wool, I felt it, and OH MY GOD, it’s softer than some of my Merino wool yarn.I thought I’d share it because it seems like a good sock yarn for a newer knitter that wanted to knit socks. You get 678 yards/620 m with this 100g ball of yarn. It’s 85% acrylic, and 15% nylon. It’s a “superfine”/number 1 yarn. The label says that it’s machine washable and dryable. The colours aren’t that diverse because I think it’s a newer product. It comes in is White, Beige, Brown (shown), Grey, Black, “denim” Blue, and Magenta.
And the price, $4 is pretty good and it seems like a good product. Also I live in Canada, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was $3 in the States. I would probably suggest that a newer knitter double it to make the sock go faster giving a faster sock.
Out of all the sock yarns that they have at Michaels this seems like one of the nicest. Patons Kroy is okay but very scratchy, Lion Brand Sock Ease I found infuriating to work with because the yarn tangled upon itself and it was just not a nice texture, and the price is awesome. You could easily make a pair of socks out of that ball because it has great yardage, and $4, DEAL! Let’s just hope they widen the colour pallet and maybe some variegated yarn?

YARN UPDATE.I was at Michaels today and wandering the yarn aisle and they expanded the colour pallets! There’s 2 more shades of blue, 2 shades of green, and 2 of purple that I recall seeing. I’m super excited, I just kind of pawed at it for a couple minutes. Also they changed the label. There’s a 25% off your entire purchase coupon tomorrow, so I’m definitely going to pick up a couple balls. Also for the real yarn connoisseurs, $5 for every $20 you spend on yarn (in Canada).

Hey lovelies!

So I’ve decided on my next human sized undertaking: The Rainy Day Vest from Emma Robertson’s beautiful book Knitting By Design.

My question: Which of these colors would you choose: Ember, Dried Rose, or Oxblood?
